S. Leonard Syme, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, Youth Empowerment Strategies (YES!), and Professor Emeritus, UC Berkeley School of Public Health
S. Leonard Syme is an emeritus professor of epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. For the first 25 years of his career, he worked as a "normal" epidemiologist trying to identify disease risk factors. For the last 15 years, he has been working to develop more effective ways to use this information to improve people's lives. This requires working with people as partners rather than as subjects, and preventing problems rather than treating or managing them. Dr. Syme is the principal investigator of the YES! project.
At the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Dr. Syme is also principal investigator of the Wellness Guide Project and the Behavioral Factors in Cardiovascular Disease Training Grant, and co-principal investigator for the Center for Community Wellness.
